September 1 - October 9, 2004
By appointment only
Traywick Contemporary, recently recognized as Best Gallery by the readers and editors of San Francisco Magazine, is pleased to announce the first exhibition in its 2004-2005 program schedule.
In September Traywick Contemporary presents Double Exposure, a portfolio of photographic diptychs organized by Edition Schellmann, a print publisher based in Munich and New York. The portfolio includes work by 14 internationally recognized artists: Uta Barth, Vanessa Beecroft, Thomas Demand, Olafur Eliasson, Nan Goldin, Candida Höfer, Axel Hütte, Alfredo Jaar, Bill Jacobson, Malerie Marder, Barbara Probst, Thomas Ruff, James Welling and Catherine Yass.
Each artist was invited to create a photograph and then to re-present the image in a manner that reflects his or her unique approach to the medium. Candida Höfer's contribution follows her practice of photographing an architectural space that has been adapted for reuse but that is empty of human inhabitants, and also documents the same space from a slightly different angle. Nan Goldin presents a familiar member of the rotating cast of characters that are the subject of her work, in similar poses taken 10 years apart. As a group, the diptychs in the Double Exposure portfolio are excellent examples of the range and depth of practice in contemporary photography.
Double Exposure has traveled to various galleries across the US and in Canada over the past year. Traywick Contemporary is proud to present the portfolio in the Bay Area. A fully illustrated catalog accompanies the exhibit.
